Clare v Kerry 1992

An advert for a pre-Super 8s, pre-backdoor, old style provincial championships era. Clare, without getting to the Munster final since 1949, without a Munster title since 1917 facing Munster champions Kerry who were in the middle of (for them) a barren spell of six years since their last All-Ireland win.

It should be noted that, in the various seeded and lop-sided formats of the Munster championship, only eight out of two hundred and seventy-two footballs finals at minor, under 21 and senior hadn’t contained either Cork or Kerry. The championship draw for 1980 had even included a preliminary round involving Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford with the winners meeting in a quarter-final to decide who would play Cork in the semi-final. The winners met Kerry who had direct entry to the final.

The rest is history.

The press coverage, to some extent, reads like a different era. The Irish Press ran with the Clare win on it’s front page.

As did the Irish Independent:

Unsurprisingly, the Cork Examiner headline “Might of Kerry is well crushed” was not particularly sympathetic to Kerry:

But then, the Kerryman’s “The humiliation of Kerry”, was even more scathing:

However, the Kerryman, to be fair, was clear about the result:
